- Disconnect negative battery terminal, disconnect wire connection to alternator.
- Loosen alternator adjustment bolt and mounting bolt, remove alternator belt, remove alternator.
- Prop up oil pan with jack and wood to stablized engine.
- Remove engine mount bolt and bracket, adjust height of jack to ease removal of long mounting bolt going through the rubber engine mount.
- Loosen power steering adjustment bolt, remove p/s bracket mounting bolt, remove bracket.
- Remove valve cover bolt and pry lose the cover. No need to totally removed the cover.
- Use small screw driver to lift plastic bracket through opening so it can be separated from the small sheet metal bracket. Also remove one 10mm screw near the right side of the timing belt cover. Then the electrical wiring riding on top of the timing belt can be moved out of the way.
- Remove upper timing belt cover bolt, slightly lift valve cover and remove timing belt cover.
- Use 17 mm socket to rotate engine to top dead center (TDC), when the small hole on cam pulley web face up it is the TDC.
- Remove the 7 bolts (three 10mm and four 12mm), slide up to remove water pump.
- Use pipe extention with 1/2 breaker bar, support bar on jack to minimized movement during cranking, break lose 17mm crank pulley bolt using ignition bump method. (Corolla is a clockwise engine)
- Slide crank pulley off shaft by hand.
- Remove middle and lower timing belt cover.
- Remove timing belt guiding thin washer.
- Loosen 10mm bolt that hold down the timing belt tension pulley.
- Remove timing belt.
- Put sealant on water pump gasket and line it up on water pump sealing surface.
- Install water pump with the 7 bolts, install pulley to axle of water pump, install 4 screws only 3 of 4 thread each to let the pulley lose. (tip: To ease installation of middle timing belt cover, do not install water pump pulley at this time, wait until middle timing belt cover is installed. However , if you did tighten the pulley bolt already, then you have to squeeze (with a bar) and distort the middle timing belt cover to get the cover in place). ( Other way to try: jack the engine higher so water pump pulley could slip between water pump shaft and inside fender)
- Install timing belt and tighten tension bearing, make sure the mark on cam pulley still align. Also keyway on crank shaft end is still pointing up.
- Slip the thin sheet metal cover that guide the timing belt onto the crank pulley, lip edge face out.
- Install lower timing belt cover, do not install left upper screw yet until middle cover is in place.
- Install middle timing belt cover. (Squeeze pass water pump pulley if it is alread install).
- Install upper timing belt cover, lift valve cover so top lip of timing belt cover and and the small sheet metal bracket can get in.
- Slip crank shaft pulley onto crank shaft end, tighten the crank shaft pulley the best you can(use jerking motion or use a hammer to hit the handle). Eventually it need to be tighten by air impact wrench when available.
- Semi install power steering pump bracket, do not tighten the (3) 14mm mounting bolts yet. Lightly pry power steering pump to creating tension in belt. Tight adjustment bolt from top of engine, then tighten mounting bolt from bottom of car.
- Install idler bracket for air-conditioning belt, do not tighten mounting bolt yet. Tighten adjustment bolt for correct tension and then tighten mounting bolt.
- Install alternator, use pry bar to create proper tension, then tighten adjustment bolt and then mounting bolt. Connect back all electrical wiring. ( there is a electrical connection between the alternator and the engine, should have connected ahead the alternator.
We install the new radiator which is the original reason for the whole repair. We connected all the wiring, upper and lower radiator hoses and we called it a day because it was already dark.
By the way, the above procedure spanned 4 to 5 days, because I have to teach my son while doing and he is doing most of the work(slowwww!!!!). In addition, it is also Tom first time to change the timing belt for a Toyota.
